In 1921, the U.S. Army constructed Building #26 at Fort Worden—a massive, specialized wooden balloon hangar designed to house the tethered observation craft of the 24th Balloon Company. Operators of these elongated "sausage" observation balloons were winched high above Admiralty Inlet, spotting enemy vessels and directing heavy artillery fire from the fort's hidden coastal batteries. Today, the hangar remains one of the rarest surviving World War I-era aviation structures in the Pacific Northwest.
